Job Seekers Inside Tips and Secrets: How to Get a High Paying High Tech Job by a Recruiter
When recruiters are sourcing (looking for candidates), they have a variety of tools to work with from career boards, job fairs and social networking sites all the way to personal interaction. The steps a recruiters uses to find candidates is called a cycle. The cycle is comprised of about 5 – 6 steps that a recruiter takes to get you, the candidate, into a job opening with the company. The first thing that you must do is to market yourself by being visible, the best way to do this is to structure your resume with keywords that are relevant to your skill set. If you are in any field, profession or industry there is a jargon that is understood by people in your occupation. If you are in high tech it is relatively easy to pepper your resume with acronyms such as OOP, DHTML, etc.
Recruiters routinely use Boolean search strings to find candidates, for example, I am looking for a java developer, so my string may look like this: “résumés + Java Developer% “html and xml”. When the search engine comes back with results, I will have a variety of candidates with the skills I am looking for. You can also make a web page with all your skills and accolades included, not only will that help you out in the search engines, it can keep a steady supply of recruiters calling you for future opportunities. Always remember that you are in sales and marketing when your looking for a job.
The next step a recruiter takes in the process is to sift through all the applicants’ that meet the key descriptions from the requisition and narrow them down to the best ones for a call. In case you are wondering what happens when you don’t receive a call, typically your resume is entered into a Applicant Tracking Device, That’s why you get calls for that particular opening months down the road. After the phone interview or soft sell, candidates are narrowed down to the face to face interview. However, it will be helpful on your part if you:
Know everything on your resume in detail, in other words, know your resume like the back of your hand.
Know about the company, such as the technology that is used as well as current events about the industry.
Have previous projects like web sites that you can use as a demo for work you have performed in the past.
Preparation is key and knowledgeable candidates are impressive to recruiters and hiring managers alike. Once you are called in for the interview be prepared for multiple interviews and sometime group interviews by the team that you will potentially be working with. This is often done to see if you are a cultural fit as well as a team player not to mention how you handle pressure . So that’s it in a nutshell, the inside story on how professional gatekeepers operate.
