Unemployment Benefits

There are calls from groups such as the AFL-CIO, as well as other organizations and social programs and the U.S. Congress itself for an increase and possibly an extension of unemployment benefits as those who are out of work and have been receiving benefits are finding it difficult to find a new job in an economy in recession.

Some would argue for an increase in the dollar amount of weekly benefits, while others claim a simple extension of benefits is all that is needed. The current situation is that nearly 650,000 persons receiving unemployment benefits will see those benefits expire at the end of September, with an additional one and a half million workers facing the expiration of their benefits by year’s end.

Something needs to be done.

The good news is that it is now possible for unemployment benefits to be applied for online, without ever having to visit an unemployment office. A new service and tool is the File For Unemployment website. This site allows those out of work to begin the process of applying for unemployment benefits online, as well as locate job training programs and job placement services.

During this difficult time, Congress and private organizations need to come together to improve the jobless situation and assist those in need. As it stands, there are currently fewer people employed than there were in the year 2000. The total U.S. unemployment rate did improve by one tenths of a percentage point from June, 2009 to July, 2009. And this is a step in the right direction.
